Hi John,
I have one of Hugh's VIN labels. They're actually aluminum that has
the background engraved away. I suspect acid engraved. The "fixed"
numbers are already on it and the other sections are left blank. I
took one to a local sign shop and had them engrave the specific's for
one of my cars. I then sprayed the whole thing with semi flat black
Krylon paint and used 1000 grit sandpaper, that was glued to a flat
wooden block,to wet sand the paint from the raised areas. 1000
grit actually gives a polished look to the raised letters and
fields. The thing ended up looking fantastic, much better than the
original screen printed aluminum tag. It may not be original, it's
better.
