Mike,
One end of your cable should have a closed hook which will go through the
backing plate and attache to the brake shoe. the other end should simply
have a treaded part which a nut can go on. From the outside take the
treaded end and push it through the hull hole into your bilge. Once inside
the car you can slide the rubber boot over it and into place. Remember
those hard plastic bushings as you call them will come out of the boot and
then can be popped back on over the wire and reinstalled inside the boot.
As I recall they have a slit in them to make this easy.
