Re: U Joint Replacement

I have 4 of the larger drive shafts in my 2 cars which have ?30mm u-
joints. (I believe there are 4 deferent styles). I replaced my u-
joints with Precision 371 which use internal clips (inside the yoke)
and the caps are ?30.2mm. From what I've seen on the Internet
Precision 371 and the SPICER 5-297X are the same size. What I did is
ground the caps to ?30mm so they would fit, I also ground the end of
the caps so the overall length would be the right size (don't
remember the size). The problem I had was the caps were rounded on
the edges so the external clips would not work correctly, they hit
in the middle not on the edges. So I machined the inside of the
yokes to receive internal clips, but in order to machine the yokes
enough to clean I had to open them up so the stock clips were not
thick enough so I had to made thicker clips.

I don't know if the SPICER 5-297X caps are rounded on the edges. If
they are not you will only need to grind the caps from ?30.2mm to
?30mm and the end of the caps to match the overall length. I have
access to machines to do all this so it didn't cost me anything to
modify. Gord told me he has the right ones for around $50.00. I
don't have the car running yet so I don't know how good all this is
going to work, I was told that I might have some vibration.
