Registerd correctly

Ken and all,

The tag office called the state office, and they added the Amphicar to the
official list of recognized car names. Evidently I am the first person to
ever register an Amphi, though I find that hard to believe.

I am now registered correctly, and subsequent visits will yield positive
results. Also, the next person to register an Amphicar will (should) have
no trouble, either.

The clerks were intrigued by the dual nature of the car, but I was adament
from the beginning that it was an automobile, and only an automobile, hence,
not once did they tell me I had to go to the Department of Natural Resources
(for boats).

Re: Registerd correctly

I'd advise against using the logic below to avoid registering it as a
boat. I'm assuming you do intend to take the car swimming.

I don't know about Georgia but in Illinois if you're in the water ...
you're a boat and need those numbers.

I didn't have any troble registering mine. Living in Illinois I just
got a supervisor and he had the drill down.

Mike,
There are in fact a couple of Club Members with cars in Georgia....plus
another 4 former Club Members in my database from your state. My guess is
that they've been registered somewhere along the line. I've found that the
local people (in your specific county) are the only ones that really can do
anything. What I mean by that is, I can go to my local BMV and have no
problem (now that I've trained them)....but if I were to go to another
county within my state, they would be lost and I would have to start all
over. It doesn't seem to ever flow up to the state level.
You also mentioned that you insisted the Amphicar was ONLY a car...not a
boat. Are you sure you don't need boat registration in your state? Sure,
if you tell the BMV it is only a car, they won't send you to the boat
people, but chances are that when you are out in the water, someone is going
to want to see some boat numbers on that fender! Of course, it will make
for a fun story....the Boat Patrol scratching their head wondering what to
do with you. Kinda like me wanting to get pulled over (on the road) for
speeding in Amphi, so that I can accidentally hand over my boat registration
when the officer asks for my license and registration!

Marc Schlemmer.

Re: Re: Registerd correctly

I'm originally from Illinois, and of course had no problems when I was
there. I also already have the boat registration.

My point in saying that it is only an automobile was to avoid the confusion
of the additional registration for watercraft numbers. I don't know about
the rest of you, but my car does not go through any metamorphisis when I go
into the water. It is just a car floating around in the water.

At any rate, they promise to have this all cleared up. I guess I'll have to
wait until next June to see for sure.

Wait, here in CT they tried to tax me twice. Once as a Motor Vehicle and once
as a Boat in the same year. I had to drive the Amphi to the town hall and
show the Tax Collector it is ONE VEHICLE.

Or move to Missouri and only register it as a boat. But that in itself
yields interesting questions when legally driving on the road with no
plates and when stopped you do show your Missouri Marine registration! To
my knowledge, that is a loophole put in for the Missouri DUKW tour vehicles
that also covers Amphicars....

Al is speaking Missouri gospel on this point. Roger Sallee keeps a
fake plate on his judst so there's something there. It does make it
challeging if you buy a Missouri car and take it to a state that
considers it to be a car first.
