Help for a new Amphi

Hey group,
We have a new Amphicar owner among us, and he is planning on signing up for
the Digest....but he has a question that he asked me to throw out to
everyone while he is getting signed up. (I really bragged on you guys, so
don't make me a liar!)

His name is Rob Schiller, and he lives in Northern Kentucky...maybe 30
minutes from me. He just bought an Amphicar that has been sitting for maybe
10 or 15 years. The car was parked and partially disassembled for some body
work. Well, the body work was mostly done, but the project was never
finished. The engine and transmission are still in the car, and everything
looks complete, just sitting for a long time. It seems the engine is froze
up....and he is hoping to avoid an overhaul at this point. His goal is just
to get the thing running, then go from there.

thanks,
Marc Schlemmer.

Here is what he says via email......

----------------------
Here's what is going on. My mechanic put a new starter on the car and it
still won't turn over. He said he tried to "get in there" and turn it with
a wrench, but he couldn't do it. He also pulled the plugs and squirted some
fluid inside the engine. He thinks the engine may need to get overhauled.
Is there anything he can do to turn it over? (in other words, is there any
amphicar unique technique to turn it over?)
Please let me know what you think.

Sincerely,
Rob Schiller

RE: Help for a new Amphi

From the two motors I rebuilt, most likely he'll find the piston rings
seized in the cylinders. New ring sets (he may have to chisel the old ones
out of the pistons) & bearings won't be very expensive (of course he'll need
upper and lower gasket sets also). While the motor is apart boiling the
block and checking all other clearances should also be done. Fortunately,
most of the cars didn't have many miles on them, so there probably won't be
much wear.

Wish him luck and much fun!

A friend of mine bought an old Jaguar some years ago
with a "siezed engine" similar to what is described
here. It had sat in a barn for 20 years. I recall
that he essentially kept pouring gallons of Marvel
Mystery Oil into the spark plug holes for several
weeks. Sure enough, the engine eventually turned over
and I do not think he ever had to open it up. Might
work if it is siezed from years of sittting. Of
course if it siezed up due to lack of oil or a
crankcase full of water then it is a whole different
story.

RE: Help for a new Amphi

Thanks to everyone who sent in some suggestions to Rob (the new Amphicar
owner with the engine locked up)
He's read the posts, and I've passed on any emails to me directly.

thanks for helping him out! (and he certainly appreciates it, too!)
Marc Schlemmer.
