Loose the lips?

Hello everyone and welcome to you John the "New Guy" !
My bodyman asked me about the availability of rear patch panels(w/lips). I know Gordon's carries them but thought I should shop around for them anyway. After contacting a couple list members, it was determined that Gordon's panels were useable but lacked upper quality. "Wavy lines" and "hard to match ends"were just a couple of terms used intodays conversation.

One option that was discussed was to loose the lips. Go flat. Bodyman wants to know if they serve any real purpose other than looks.One pro togoing flat is a large cost savings. Of course the con is no lips.

Any thoughts?

Replace the bad sections with flat metal, thencut and fit90 degreeangle stock where the lip is supposed to be. Why role them in, when you canwelded them on. I know this has been done on other cars and you can't tell the difference.

Brian, someone once told me that the steel on the cars with the lips is
slightly thinner and the profile at the bottom works as a reinforcement -
another explanation is they provide somewhere for the metal to absorb a dent
rather than putting extra force on the rivits, but I think most people keep
them because they look better !

Is this the "bondo body bloke" you had problems with last week ? Kick him
into touch !!
