Strange water trans noise

We have had a couple of reasonably good weekends the past few weeks and I
have been taking the car into the local river a number of times. I have
begun to notice a strange noise coming from the water transmission. The
noise appears as a relatively loud chattering sound almost like a muted
grinding noise. It seems most prevalent when the water trans is engaged and
I am in the process of letting the clutch out to start off in first gear
(i.e. entering the water). The land gearbox shifts smoothly and is very
quiet by itself, it only seems to make a clattering when I am letting the
clutch out with water trans engaged. It will also clatter when the land
trans is in neutral and I let the clutch out with the water trans engaged.
The water trans will make noise when you abruptly accelerate the gearpack
with the water trans engaged as well. I have checked the fluids etc. and
all seems well. Also the water trans is quiet once it is running
steady-state at speed, it only seems to make noises during abrupt
acceleration. Do these symptoms sound familiar to any one? BTW the gearbox
has a grand total of about 300 miles on it, it was purchased years ago NOS.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Gary Schulz

Re: Strange water trans noise

Gary
I replaced bearings and one gear in our water tranny a month or so
ago, it too had been noisy until it finally broke on us while
underway on the Rock river. It sounds like you have some bearings
going out which if let alone may possibly ruin gears. Gordon's has
all you need to fix it up and you don't have to pull the engine to do
the work. If you do pull it apart, be sure to order 2 gaskets when
ordering bearings and what ever else you need.

Re: Strange water trans noise

Hi Gary,

I don't know if anyone suggested this yet (I don't
read all the mail), but it might be your propeller
shafts. They have a couple of things that get loose
and could be causing the chatter. We had a prop strut
with bad bearings or the u joint (I don't remember,
Billy took care of it), but we had a similar chatter.
