There is probably someone better on the list to answer
some of your questions about checking a car after long
term storage, but I will try to help you from a new
guy's point of view. If any others on the list are
more "expert" than me, feel free to step in and add to
my answers here.
The windshield glass should be glass. I understand
they are difficult to find.
Gordons number can be found by going to
www.amphicar.com and going to the "Classifieds"
section. He always has an ad running. He does NOT have
an 800 number. You can fax him, though, and he will
send you a catalog.
The bilge plug hole is what you are describing on the
hull behind the passenger wheel. I think Gordons will
sell you the proper plug for about $20-25. It should
be brass with a hex nut on top.
Gordons has tops too. I think white tops went with red
cars.
A quick way (maybe not in your weather though!) to
check for leakage would be to put the bilge plug in
and then stick a garden hose running into the bilge
area under the rear seat. Let it fill up some and see
if water leaks out. Then stick the hose in the engine
compartment around the battery area (chronic problem
area in Amphis) to check for leaks. I found it hard to
test the seals at the doors unless I was actually in
the water, though.
Check operation of the bilge pump also with this water
in the bilge area (when you have a good battery).
