Vin Plates - 11-14-2001, 10:53 PM

Dare I get involved with this but couldn't the metal die stamps come
from Amphicar corp as a tool set as most of the dealers also serviced
these cars and had parts rooms and specialized tools for the car.
Could this also be a possibility?

Is there a way to take the engine number and convert to a year number
except I think I remember Dave saying all the engines were bought in
60 or 61 is this the case?

Doug

I suppose this is a possibility, however the plate would have to be removed from the car and it still seems unlikely to get the identical characteristics such as depth of penetration/ registration etc.... Unless the VIN plates were shipped to dealers completely blank, but I think that would be highly illegal. Also who was in charge of handing out the numbers if that was the case? It would be great to come up with a complete detailed data-base to look at the overall trend in features vs. VIN and registration date.

The blank VIN plates Hugh sells are stainless steel reproductions (as opposed to aluminum originals). He has both styles, early and late.

Hi John,
I have one of Hugh's VIN labels. They're actually aluminum that has
the background engraved away. I suspect acid engraved. The "fixed"
numbers are already on it and the other sections are left blank. I
took one to a local sign shop and had them engrave the specific's for
one of my cars. I then sprayed the whole thing with semi flat black
Krylon paint and used 1000 grit sandpaper, that was glued to a flat
wooden block,to wet sand the paint from the raised areas. 1000
grit actually gives a polished look to the raised letters and
fields. The thing ended up looking fantastic, much better than the
original screen printed aluminum tag. It may not be original, it's
better.

I would bet against the thought of the plates being blank and the dealer
stamping them. From the pictures I've seen of peoples' VIN plates, the
characters and stampings look the same, ie same sloppy placement, same
size/style, etc. as the one on my car. I find it highly unlikely all the
data plates were from cars that were sold by the same place as my car.
