Dare I get involved with this but couldn't the metal die stamps come
from Amphicar corp as a tool set as most of the dealers also serviced
these cars and had parts rooms and specialized tools for the car.
Could this also be a possibility?

Is there a way to take the engine number and convert to a year number
except I think I remember Dave saying all the engines were bought in
60 or 61 is this the case?

I suppose this is a possibility, however the plate would have to be removed from the car and it still seems unlikely to get the identical characteristics such as depth of penetration/ registration etc.... Unless the VIN plates were shipped to dealers completely blank, but I think that would be highly illegal. Also who was in charge of handing out the numbers if that was the case? It would be great to come up with a complete detailed data-base to look at the overall trend in features vs. VIN and registration date.
