This pump really SUCKS!!!

This pump really SUCKS!!!

A few weeks back Mike Israel wrote...

Snip< "Recently I installed a "Jabsco Utility Puppy 2000"
Flexible Impeller Pump in place of the original. It
fit in the same spot and, even when connected to the
original bilge switch, is not popping fuses. Another
extremely nice feature of this pump is that it will run
dry for up to 20 minutes without burning up. (try that
with your original). The Jabsco is a bit expensive, but
not much more that the reproduction units. You may
find them at your local boating supply store or order...">

Taking Mike's advice I purchased the Jabsco Utility
Puppy 2000. I installed it over the weekend and
upgraded to 3/4" tubing. The pump actually did fit
in the original location and required only 2 holes to
be drilled into the pump mounting bracket (no new
holes needed on Amphi what-so-friggin-ever. Total
installation was 20 minutes... which isn't bad if you
take into account I'm half thumbs - half fins. As a
"bench test" I filled a trash can with water and for
a real challenge, few hand fulls of dried leaves,
(40 gallons worth) and then yanked the bilge knob.
The Jabsco Water Puppy screamed to life like an
alien siren going to war. Before I knew what was
happening Amphi's bilge spout blew of the drainage
hose I rigged up and then began to shoot a thick
stream of water OVER my Mermaid wife's Miata
and half way into the street!!! Frantically I scrambled
to see if anyone was walking their dog or a cop
on the prowl, or Mermaid in the vicinity... luckily
no one around. By the time I got back to turn off
the bilge pump the trash can was empty. I reckon
2-3 minutes to move 40 gallons. I was so impressed
I thought it was prom night. Man, that pump sucks like...
never mind, trust me it sucks great, reckon it could
suck a golf ball through a garden hose. I dare some
sod to tailgate Amphi now... they'll drown. Anyway,
I want to thank Mike for his recommendation and add
my Amphipoda endorsement as well. The Jabsco Utility
Puppy 2000 is worth every bit of its $204.83 price
tag and is officially an Amphipoda endorsed product.
Hell, it's even pretty close to my Amphi's blue color
too. I bought mine direct from http://pyacht.iserver.net
or call them - Toll free: 1-877-379-2248 and ask for
Model number SKU:jab239209403. And like Mike, I have
no affiliation with these guys... but I like their pump.
Thanks again Mike!

Be well, swim safe - viva Celina!

Hello, will this pump work on a car still on positive ground, or will it run
backwards? If so, would changing the inlet/outlet work, or would the
impellers pump poorly?
Thanks!

If it's like the original pump, and I suspect it is, you simply
reverse the wires to the pump to get it working in the direction that
you want. This type of pump doesn't normally assume a negative, or
any, ground. They just bring both wires out.

Re: Re: This pump really SUCKS!!!

John is correct. I have the Jabsco pump on my car.
Simply hook up the red wire to positive, the black
wire to negative.

BTW, JABSCO recommends that the pump be mounted with
the inlet/outlet area facing down and the motor facing
up. I suspect that this would probably make sense
even for those with original style pumps. Not only
does it lessen the likelihood of water entering the
motor assembly, it reduces the hose length required as
well as the need to pull the water up as high through
the hoses.

You will find that the Jabsco pump is considerably
heavier than the Wilcox units. Where the Wilcox uses
plastic, the Jabso uses solid brass. As mentioned in
my original post they biggest advantage is that they
can be run dry for 10-20 minutes without damage. They
also seem to draw less current which should equate to
longer to run time.
