Exterior Trim

How do you remove the trim strips from the top of the rear fins? Are there
hidden clip fasteners or some kind of snap groove?

Thanks,

Ed

Re: Exterior Trim

Ed,
Pulling those strips is a pain. There's nothing holding them other
than glue. The big problem is when a piece of the glue breaks loose,
you bend the strip since the rest of the glue is still holding. I
would recommend a custom made grabbing device that can pinch an
extended area along the lower edge of the strip and lift the strip
with a chain type hoist. That way you practically eliminate the
"bounce" when the glue breaks loose and minimize the bending. It
would probably help to heat the section of strip to soften the glue
first.
When all else fails, I found a place in L.A. that did an amazing job
of perfectly straightening the bent strips and they replated all seven
pieces plus an extra one that I had around. They charged about $400
for the whole deal and they came out looking perfect and original.
The original finish is called "bright dip anodizing" It's a "not
often done" and highly toxic type of anodizing. Most anodizers won't
do it today. These guys had a $250 minimum charge so you don't want
them to do one piece. Having them all done though, I thought, was a
pretty good deal. The place is called: Anobrite and their web site is
http://anobrite.com/. They're kind of a one stop place for all trim
repairing.

Ed,

NEVER use any type of "gripping device" on the trim! That will
guarantee damage. Use a heat gun (not a hair dryer!) to heat up the
glue through the trim. (Be careful of the paint if it is not getting
painted) Apply heat generously along a 12" or so section at a time.
It works best with someone keeping it heated while you use a hammer
and a piece of hardwood (pine is too soft and will splinter) placed
along the bottom edge to SLOWLY loosen the trim being careful not to
raise it more than need be (only enough to release it) to avoid
bending it. Do this a little at a time until it becomes loose enough
to totally remove. I did all my trim this way w/o bending or scarring
any of it.

Re: Exterior Trim

Ed,
Here's what I did to remove the fin trim. I cut one end of a piece of
1''x1''x4'' oak into a wedge. A little steeper than 45 degrees. Be sure
the wood grain runs the 4'' length. Then, starting at the rear vertical
portion, I placed the wedge on the bottom side of the trim and start tapping
firmly.
As I recall, it took me all of 45 minutes and two wedges and my trim came
off with only a slight bow. I agree with John. Heat will probably help.
That's
some pretty tough glue holding that trim in place so don't be discouraged
if the first taps don't budge it. Just hit it harder. It'll come off.
Good luck!
