What is your clutch master cylinder from originally?

Does any of our micro-car guys know of a small (in size) power
booster from a brake system? Electric or vacuum operated. I need one
to help with the forces needed to pull my hand clutch. I can do it
now, but it takes about 60+lbs of pull.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated

I believe that it fits late 70s vintage International. The master I
am using is for a clutch and not the brakes.

The problems that I need to contend with are the physical size of the
can (booster) and the vacuum needed to operate it (large can, more
vacuum). I will use an accumulator to store vacuum, but as you know,
room is a concern.

I am hopeing that the 1147 engine will be able to provide enough
vacuum along with the accumulator to make my evil plan work. Mooo bwa
ha ha ha!!

Cap'n:

Just as a followup on Bo's posting below, for a knowledgeable source and
online catalogs on all manner of Triumph cars, you might visit
http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/ . While I was unable to find any reference to
vacuum assisted or "servo" brake systems for Heralds as such in their online
catalog, there are such Lockheed servo units available for other other
Triumph models such as the Dolomite and Spitfire. Perhaps you could drop
them a line for their advice on the matter.

Before you make any such modifications however, please be advised that I
have encountered warnings here and there on the 'net against fitting such
brake servo mechanisms to twin-leading shoe type drum brake systems such as:
"...A servo should not be added to cars with front drums as it may cause
snatching of the brakes due to the self-servo action of twin leading shoe
type front drums." found at

such warnings come from authoritative sources or apply to the Amphicar I
will leave you to determine, but I thought you should be made aware of them.

Given your work in the field of vehicular hand controls for the disabled,
one might assume that you could be familiar with the similar efforts in
vacuum controls of Les Schofield. In the event that you hadn't, please see

article offers plenty of contact information for Mr. Schofield's and other
mobility systems suppliers.

Hello John.
On some of the Triumph Heralds there was a vacuum power brake unit installed
as an option, also together with 1197 engines.
The unit was mounted separately from the master-cylinder and it was a very
"neat" unit.
I don't know if the Herald was sold in the US, if not there are probably
some other British oldies that had the same unit.

Bilgy as always, comes up with some great answers! The booster is for
assisting my hand clutch and not the brakes. I have an idea for that
that will take some months to decide if it's do-able or not.

Now as far as getting vacuum for the operation of the booster, where
on the 1147 engine should I go to to get the best vacuum? I may have
to add a vacuum pump, but I want to avoid that electrical addition if
possible. An accumilator will help with reserve vacuum.


The CDs have proven to be a bit problematic. I have had to redo some
of the files as they somehow got corrupted (I have since reinstalled
my compete OS). The ones I thought were ready to ship last Saturday
are now scrap. I have 25+ copies of a really cool looking coasters
for cheap if anyone is interested. I have spent 4-6 hrs each eve
correcting this so I can get them out soon. I am sorry for the delay,
but I don't want to send out anything less than what you expected and
paid for. I have added some interesting things to the CDs to make
them a better deal too, Gay-roan-teed!
