The Next Big Amphicar Day Has Arrived (Almost)

My method of longer and longer test drives (then fixing what breaks) reached
it's zenith today as I took my Amphicar out on a 4 lane boulevard today. It ran
fine as I reached the heretofore unheard of speed of 42 mph! The only problem I
am aware of now is that the tranny does make some noise at 30 and above. At
least I think it is the tranny, as it goes away when I push in the clutch. Seems
to shift alright, so I think I am ok. Is a noisy tranny an imment sign of death,
or can they go for a while like that?

The carbie stalling problem appears resolved. I asked the local gurus at the
british car place here in town, and the first thing they asked me was did the
car start right up without the choke, and then stall when warm. I said yes, and
they told me it was running too rich. Sure enough, the plugs looked black. Took
the carbie apart, and there was a big chunk of something mysterious in the main
jet. Took that out, leaned the mixture out, and so far so good.

So...Thursday at lunch I am going to take the plunge and go get it inspected. A
15 mile round trip on a busy street in a 40 year old car I put together myself.
I shall prevail! And my wife shall follow in the jeep with a rope! ;^)

Wish me well guys. And, just as an aside..is this group cool or what?

Dan

Dan:
Great job on your car. I experience fouled plugs from time to time too. My
carbs seem to run fine and I still never know when it's going to happen. Let me
know if you find the fix to the problem. My adjustments never seem to work.
Regarding transmissions, everyone's going to have a different view but I find
most of them all have some noise. It rare not to have some when your cars small
and enclosed. I also find they are tough and bullet proof transmissions in
general. They are too expensive to take for granted though so keep the fluid
levels checked etc.
