Turned out the plstic was softening for some reason,
not any hard water scale or calcium. I tried paint
thinner (no results), vinegar (no results), acetone
(too hot & tried to melt them more).
Finally used some scotch brite to "sand" interior and
a knife to scrape a bit. Finally used 3 coats of
clear lacquer inside & out to seal the plastic. At
first I thought the lacquer was melting the plastic as
the acetone, but they dried well and have returned to
their clear, sharp looking selves. The lacquer coats
should provide on-going protection.
Somethings just work better than planned!
