Subject: [amphicar-lovers] Hot Carb
Has anyone had a problem with a carb dripping fuel down the carb
after shutting the engine off? Maybe float set to high or just from
heat rising on carb from exhaust manifold. I thought about making a
heat plate to keep heat from rising on carb. Anyone have any ideas?

P.S It only gurgles when It gets shut off!!
Mike:
Haven't you noticed the "tube to nowhere" yet? It comes out of the intake
manifold, just below the carb, and runs down into the bilge. That's Triumph's
solution to carbs that get so hot that they boil the gas out of the float bowl;
just let it drip on the street!
Amphis have a little problem with that solution, so the Germans put a bend in
the pipe, and ran it up for a few inches. I suppose the hope was that the
drippings wouldn't fill the U-bend and then overflow. (Gasoline dripped into the
bilge is not a good idea.)
There has been much talk about carb overheating. Shields have been designed, and
the carb should be mounted on a thick spacer to minimize heating from the
manifold. (One bad design point is that, on the 1147cc engines, the intake and
exhaust manifold is one piece, guaranteeing that the intake area gets just as
hot as the exhaust area.) Do a search of the post archives for carburetors and
drip tube and overheating, and you will find a wealth of ideas. The club web
site also has photos of heat shields.
