I took both front backing plates off to coat with POR 15 and now
i'm not sure what position they were in. In fact, I think both were
on differently.

Are the cylinders vertical? Or are they rotated back to the next
hole so the brake hose won't hit the shock?

In the Maintenance Manual on page 6/2 it shows them vertical and
also in the Spare Parts-Special Tools book on page 6/4 or picture
6/23.

But when you see an actual picture in the Maintenance Manuel page
6/8 it looks like they are rotated back a hole.

I think, I remember one was vertical and the other back a hole.
Next time I'll get the camera out.

They should be rotated back a hole, they certainly were on all later cars, this
is for three reasons, as you say it helps keep the hose away from the shock it
also protects the bleed valve on the bottom cylinder but also stops grit (which
naturally collects at the bottom of the drum) from settling in the cylinder.

Make sure you use the correct shakeproof washers on the 6 (or is it 8) bolts
that hold the backplate to the hub. For some reason these tend to come loose.

lock washer? The ones that came off look like lock washers.You were right, they
weren't on very tight when I took them off. I was going to buy some new
stainless washers and use some Locktite 242 ( blue ).

I don't know how common this is, but many of the lockwashers on my Amphi were
cracked when I took them off. This disturbed me so much that I make sure that I
never re-use any of the old lockwashers as I re-build.

BTW, the backing plate lockwashers are split-ring style; that is, they look like
a flat washer that has been radially split and axially deformed. Use this same
style, and the bolt will pre-load nicely. The Loctite is good extra insurance.

Shakeproof washers might have a different name in the US, maybe star washers ?
They have multiple locking points instead of a single point as in a normal lock
washer, this makes them more effective on small diameter bolts, the only
downside of them is you can really only use them once before they become
ineffective. I think 4 of those 6 or 8 bolts are normal nut and bolt and go
right thorough ? If so then use a nylock nut on the back. Loctite is probably a
good idea as well as it stops corrosion. Stainless washers are OK but not
stainless bolts, you shouldn't use stainless bolts on anything relating to
suspension and brakes, they aren't really strong enough.

David is right about the style of washers. Although all 32 of the filister head
bolts on all of my backing plates had split ring lockwashers, the Parts Manual
calls out a DIN 6797 lockwasher (Parts 6-22-5 and 6-22-12). Here's a site that
shows Metric 6 & 8 DIN 6797 internal toothed lockwashers:

But I still think a split ring washer with a Loctite'd bolt will work fine. And
Nyloc insert nuts work great too
