amp gauge wiring

I'm about to install an amp gauge in my amphicar and I still have the
generator and a positive ground system.
Can someone please tell me where to connect the two wires from the gauge?
Thanks!

With the caution that my Amphi has no wiring in it right now, and that I'm
looking at the big, laminated Amphi schematic, here goes.

You want to install an ammeter between the battery an all electrical loads
(except the starter and starter relay, which draw a huge amount of current, for
only a very short time).

I would lift the Red wire off of Terminal 51 of the Starter Solenoid Switch
(Item #44). Connect the positive terminal of the ammeter to the lug on the red
wire and connect the negative terminal of the ammeter to the newly vacated
Terminal 51.

You could also do this at the Regulator (Item #43). Here, connect the ammeter
positive to the Red wire, and connect the ammeter negative to Terminal 51 on the
Regulator.

This arrangement puts the generator and regulator on the load side of the
ammeter. After all, you don't want to measure how much current the generator is
supplying to the car, you just want the net flow in/out of the battery. This
arrangement also protects the ammeter from damage caused by the several hundred
Amps that the starter motor tries to draw when you turn the key. Remember, you
should have no connections to the battery negative terminal other than the
single heavy battery cable that runs to the Starter Solenoid Switch.

I think the Switch is easier to get at than the Regulator. I am assuming that
you are using a simple ammeter, not a shunt ammeter. Also, use fairly heavy wire
to run between the ammeter and the point of insertion; I suggest #10 stranded.
Also, use proper crimped and soldered wire lugs, or a proper wire-nut. I suggest
a 30/0/30 Amp ammeter; I think it would be rare to ever draw more than 30 Amps
to the car's load, and the stock generator can't charge more than about 15 Amps
anyway.

If you want to use a shunted ammeter, this is technically nicer, but has a
slightly more complicated wiring requirement. I'll get into that only if you
need me to.

Re: amp gauge wiring

Thanks a lot Ed!
Yes it is a simple amp meter and I'll let you know later today how it went.
I'm also installing an hour meter which I'm connecting into the prop
light circuit to keep track or water time, and a new fangled Faria Pilot
I combination depth sounder, water temp, water speed and water distance
traveled. Should have it all done today and then I'll put a couple
picts on my amphi website.

All dond and working. Only difference was I had to connect the wires
reverse of how you described to get the needle on the right side of center.

This is how it works: Connect the positive terminal of the ammeter to
the newly vacated Terminal 51 and connect the negative terminal of the
ammeter to the
lug on the red wire.

I took it ou and water tested the depth/speed gauge today too, works
great, here's some pictures:

Tom:
Your gauges look great. For that matter so does the entire car. I bet the
guy in Moose Jaw Canada would be shocked to see it now even though it was a
good solid car originally. A beautiful job!
