Newbie Questions

Hello,

Does anyone know where a good place to find amphi cars might be? I
have done alot of searches on the internet, but havent found much. I
am looking for a military vehicle, preferably, but would also
consider a civilian model. For the military model, I was looking for
the Ford GPA.

I plan to use my car to commute across the Potomac river in the
Washington DC area, atleast in the summer. With an amphi car, I can
reduce the 43 mile each way commute to 8 miles each way, and have
already scoped out a public boat ramp on each side of the river.

How is the maintenance on these cars? Am I kidding myself in
thinking that I could drive it to work everyday?

Is it difficult to insure them? How do you explain to your car
company that your car sank?

Thanks
Andy

Andy,
I live in the DC area and I too have to cross the Potomac to get to work.
Where would you be making your crossing? River conditions are definitely
a factor, even if the weather is nice.

I don't know of any GPAs for sale (that will be a tough one), but if
you have either a condition or a budget in mind contact me and I
will see what is available in my database. Call me at 970-532-4104
between 6:30PM and 10PM (Mountain)

The 8 mile commute will be about 2 hours in the Amphi. Keep in mind
they only top out @ about 6MPH so the current will need to be
factored into that speed and time.

>>How is the maintenance on these cars? Am I kidding myself in

The maintenance is about what a well used 4x4 is. Lots of greasing
and visual inspections. In the last 18 months I have put 4200 miles
on land and 190 hours in the water with mine. I never hesitate to
drive it anywhere. If the car is in good mechanical condition and
well kept it can be a decent commuter. I am told many of the folks
in Germany use thiers daily. I have heard of acouple with 200,000+
miles on them.

>>Is it difficult to insure them?

Not at all. Haggerty Insurance will do a "agreed value" policy with
a water policy rider added. Just don't mention the daily commute.
They have many Amphicars insured with them. There are other choices
as weel. I can only speak about my experience with Haggerty.

>>How do you explain to your car company that your car sank?

Just say the car sank and you need to get it retrieved and file a
claim. That is why you have insurance.

Re: Newbie Questions

I go from Maryland to Virginia. I would be putting in at Bryans
Road, which is just at the Charles and Prince Georges county lines,
and I would be coming out next to Fort Belvoir in Virginia.

I cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge everyday, and keep an eye on the
river when I do. It looks to me that I could get away with making
the water trip about 3 days a week on average. Of course I have no
experience with the amphicars, but the water looks calm enough that
often.

In an earlier post, someone answered me and said that it would
probablly take an hour or more to get across the river, that the
vehicles only do about 6mph in the water. May not be worth it,
though I would still very much like to own one for weekends if
nothing else. I considered getting a DUCKW and charging people to
cross the river with me. I dont know if they have a better top end
on the water or not, but they seemed too big to comfortably drive on
the road ways.

Question, would adding a small outboard motor help in the water
travel? I assume that the shape of the hull, or car, is a bit of a
hinderance on making good time on the water, more so than the engine?

I have looked at the Schwimmwagon, which is a German design from
WWII, it has an external prop. Do the civilian models also have
this? If not, how do they propel themselves through the water?

Andy

Thanks for the offer! I will try to reach you one evening next
week. I am looking for something that is in good enough condition to
use. I would need the body to be in very good shape as I dont have
the time or experience to do that work myself, besides some
adventures in Bondo when I was a teenager. I would like it to
atleast run, though I should have no troble maintaining the engine.
Does Chilton make a manual for the Amphicar?

Thanks
Andy

Re: Re: Newbie Questions

Andrew,

For starters you might want to visit amphicar.com and
many of the other sites which have good information
and will answer a lot of your questions such as how
the Amphi is propelled (dual props). Also, visit the
Yahoogroup archives or the archives at
http://www.escribe.com/automotive/amphicar/search.html
which will provide you more info than you ever wanted
to know.

I think you will find that a DUKW is considerably more
expensive than an Amphicar. Also, if you are going to
charge passengers on a regular basis you will need to
become a U.S. Coast Guard certified Captain and
probably will need a heft liability insurance policy.
