Re: Goop
Hello Ray,
I use POR 15 around the battery tray area but then topcoat that and
do the whole interior (up to the cross brace under the spare tire)
with an epoxy mastic material. (Dupont Corlar 25P is one brand but
there is at least one other identical brand out there. Billy Syx
told me about the stuff and I consider it one of the best restoration
tips that I received when doing my cars. The stuff is designed to
withstand continuous immersion under gas and oil. The material
doesn't require a primer and works fine as a top coat since it can
comes in colors but can be custom colored to any shade you want.
It's rather thick and can be worked with a roller to give the look of
the original Amphicar interior coating. It dries rather to a rather
flat finish and is very durable. It also isn't bothered by UV the
way POR 15 is. It's an industrial finish and well worth the time to
track down.
Under the front hood and around the trunk area I wanted something
that layed down more so I used a marine top deck paint with as much
flattening agent as it would take. It leaves a nice semi gloss
finish that is also durable.

Re: Re: Goop
The thing to remember with POR-15 is that the surface
needs to be prepped really well and must be COMPLETELY
free of ANY oil or grease residue. If not, it WILL
start lifting and then you have the problem of water
getting underneath where it lifts. Waxoil type
coatings are already an oily goop which never really
dries so it is nice for coating many areas that you
just can not get cleaned up or will be hidden and you
just want some extra protection. If the surface is
prepped properly, POR-15 is a very durable coating.

The stuff I use comes from Eastwood but I think it's pretty much the

because it can't be top coated and isn't all that attractive to look

Re: Re: Goop
Among other necessaries for your Amphicar, AMSOIL makes a superb Waxoyl-type
spray in a can called "MPHD Heavy Duty Metal Protector" (AMSOIL Product
Code: AMH). For more details or ordering info, please see

Re: Goop
Ray and Bill,
I use that Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector on the contacts inside
the lamp assemblies. I find it difficult to completely eliminate
water from the front turn signal lenses and I run with
essentially "open" headlight assemblies. That metal protector stuff
is thin enough to coat things pretty evenly and yet tough enough to
protect and not come off easily. I also spray the adjusting screws
inside the headlamp assemblies so that they don't rust away. It
would probably also work inside the support frame areas.
I have a certain benifit by the fact that I drive the car 15 to 20
miles to and from the local lakes. The benifit is that most all the
cars parts are comepletely dried out by the time I get home.
