Steve Behnke update

Two weeks ago we I shared some bad news about club member Steve Behnke. I
talked to his wife Agnes last night and I'm happy to report that Steve has
made some positive progress. Admittedly, the condition is still very
serious, but Steve has made some improvements. Most notably is that he is
awake and the breathing tube has recently been removed. Agnes was obviously
pleased to have the opportunity to talk with her husband again! He is still
VERY weak, and basically has lost all use of his muscles in the few weeks
that he was completely out of commission. He is beginning physical therapy,
however, and will begin working on getting his motor skills back. Luckily,
though, he is in no real pain at this point....just very frustrated that he
is so weak. The chemotherapy will continue, and although it is still early,
there were some small, positive signs in the lymph nodes.
As you can imagine, Steve has a long road ahead of him, and he continues to
need all of our thoughts and prayers. In Steve's weak voice, he told me "I
sure need your prayers bad."
Agnes and Steve, along with Nicole and Abbie, are very appreciative of all
the cards and thoughts they have received from the Amphicar fold. Agnes
asked me to pass along how grateful they are to have the Amphicar Club as
part of their family.
She promised to keep me updated so that I can pass the information on to all
on the Digest.

thanks,
Marc Schlemmer.

Hi

I am a new member. I also had to go through chemotherapy for Hepatitis C. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to go.
I wishhe and his family the best.

Steve Behnke update

I just talked to Agnes Behnke, and I wanted to give you an update on how
Steve is doing.
Just this past Saturday, Steve was moved from the hospital to a special
re-hab hospital. The reason is that his medical needs are somewhat under
control, and his physical therapy needs are most important now. In this new
facility, he is getting heavy concentration of therapy to gain back use of
his muscles. He is still very weak, but is able to take a few steps with
help. He also has some basic use of his arms and can even play cards with
Nicole when she goes to visit her Dad!
When I said that he was moved because his medical needs were somewhat under
control...I guess a better description would be that he has somewhat
stabilized. He's continuing the chemotherapy, and they really won't know
how well it has worked until the program is completed. Meanwhile, they
wanted him to get his strength up and his muscles working again. The
doctors are also keeping a close eye on his liver function. It isn't what
it should be, but they're expecting that when the chemotherapy is over, it
will come around.
Besides being weak, he really doesn't feel too bad! The chemotherapy isn't
making him sick. He has lost a lot of weight, and next week they hope to
get him started eating. They've been working on his throat and swallowing,
getting him ready to start on food again.
In general, Agnes said that his spirits are still good, and he is working
hard to gain his strength so he can come home.
He still needs us to keep him in our thoughts and prayers as he works hard
to fight this. Steve and Agnes sure appreciate all the cards and well
wishes they've received. They are quite touched at how the Amphicar family
has responded and shown them how much we think of their family.

Marc Schlemmer.
