bearings and starters

Thank you for the info bearings. I have it all ready to go back together and will pick up the bearing at Napa Monday. I wanted to through out a topic for discussion on the front seal for the front hub. When I used to train auto technicians at the Chevy store I worked at, I would tell them to look at the seal and the spring in the seal. We always taught the spring went toward the fluid you wanted to keep in not the fluid you wanted to keep out. So which way does the front hubgrease seal go. I know thean swearjust thought it would be fun to hear the logic from you. Also to bench check your starter out of car, use your jumper cables and attach one lead to the smarter the other to the 12 volt lead. it should spin fast like it wasengaging in the flywheel.Timwick

Ahh, the great seal direction controversy. Do you want to keep the water out or the grease in? Which is worse, bearing corrosion or grease on the brake shoes?

Mike Echemann has reminded us that "Page 4/5 of the manual specifically states: 'Attention: The radial oil seal lip must face to the outside of the bore'." This part of my restoration has stalled for a while, but I had planned to use the modified Bearing Buddies, which will keep a small positive pressure on the grease pack, so I suppose I should be placing the seals to oppose the grease escape, and counting on the pressure to keep water out. I hope.

You should always lash down a starter motor (clamp a mounting lug or flange in a sturdy vise and tighten well) before testing it on a bench. Otherwise, it's likely to roll over like a badger on crack and try to attack your foot.

Tim -

In the case of the front hub seals, the water is the fluid you want
to keep out more so than keeping grease in. I install my seals, pack
the bearing by hand and pump 'em full with this in mind.
