color change

It is crazy to change color on any car. unless every part is removed from
the body so that all the old color is totally removed. The typical color
change always results in endless places that the old color shows. any body
person that says that you wont be able to tell that the color has been
changed is wrong. It is not possible

I think that if the color look great on the Amphi, other non original colors
are fine. But if the color is not sharp, the car will only appeal to a
limited market. The market is already small, so making it smaller only
results in longer marketing time and the seller reducing the price to help
it sell. So in my opinion, weird color choices or color changes not done
right decrease the value of the car.

Re: color change

Actually Rob, I can do a color change and absolutely guarantee no one
will ever know, unless the original "tag" showing the color code is
still with the vehicle! I have done several over the past 30+ years, I
don't enjoy doing them, but it can be done! Gary.

Re: color change

hello gary . . do you know a 'positive' method to determine the 'original' color of an amphi? mine is [now] a 'white' 1968euro car . . however, there is some traces of 'blue' under the hood cross-members and near the door hinges. i will be restoring it soon, with 'no' short cuts; it's gonna be a first class job, where 'ORIGINAL' color is important . .

Re: color change

Hi Joe - The only "positive" method is to search for clues around edges of pieces which were not removed at paint time, especially under the floor board and the underside of the cowl, etc. If you're going to restore the car, try sanding a bit around the areas you suspect(where the blue is showing). It is possible, of course, that the car has had "rust free" panels installed at some point, that came from a blue car. Good luck with your restoration! Gary.

Re: color change

Common situation on late cars, remember by 1968 (in fact by 1966) Amphicar had a factory full of unused parts. The blue was quite commonly reused - by the mid 1960s the green and blue were very out of fashion - the red was most popular with the "sporty" crackle black painted dash. Certainly panels and possibly complete cars were resprayed at the factory. No definitive guide but look for original colour inside the hull, also some later cars were different colours from the main four - mostly specials to customer order - but most of those cars were Europe only, generally cars in the States are earlier production.
