Re: super deal

Hi Rob,

The difference between the two 1296 engines that you mentioned is the
size of the journal bearings. Both engines are a short stroke design,
like the 1147, and capable of high RPM's. The large journal (bearing)
engine is more durable because of it's larger bearing size but the
crankshaft of the small journal version has a lower rotating mass to
the crankshaft and is thus able to change RPM's more rapidly. This
quality is desirable in a racing engine but not of much value in an
Amphicar. There is a class of racing where this engine is desirable
and that's why it tends to be harder to find and often more expensive.

These engines were built with higher and lower compression ratios and I
suspect that factor might be more important to performance than the
journal bearing size.
