Throttle Body Fuel Injection System

After discussions with Sam Ferge at Celina, I have decided to pursue
the development of a throttle body fuel injection system for our
amphi's. I will meet on Tuesday with a contractor that I use at work
to develop engine calibrations for our marine engine control product.
I'm wondering how many would be interested in a system that would be
able to replace the carb and the distributor. I will have to work on
adapting sensors for crank position, temperature, both air and
coolant, and manifold pressure. We could add an oxygen sensor to the
exhaust if we want to use closed loop fuel control. I would use a
fueling method know as speed density to calculate fuel quantity. A
harness would have to be developed. The ECM for this is a very small
unit about 4.5 inches square. I need to check on the positive ground
issues, too. I think we could get this together for around $1200-
$1500. If this is too much, what's a good price? I need to pay for
some dynomometer time, so I'm looking gauge interest from other amphi
owners. I am also interested in knowing if anyone has made an adapter
for the 1147 to a dyno. This would save some tools. Please let me know
if you are interested. TCGoesch@aol.com

Re: Throttle Body Fuel Injection System

Tom - I have been researching this very thing for some time now. Go
with the closed loop system. It will be far better in the long run for
drive-ability, fuel economy (somewhat) and cold starts. Installing a
bung for the O2 is too easy not to include it. Are you using off the
shelf components? There are a few systems out there that show promise
if adapted properly to the 1147.

It is one of the many ideas I have planned someday for a hull I have.

May want to check with Moss motors . They had a system for MGs. Later

-- Tom ,doesnt a speed denisity system use the spedo to get its
reading?? How would this work in the water?? Tom "BLUGILL"- I would

Re: Throttle Body Fuel Injection System

Interesting idea, just not sure if is overkill on the
old Triumph engine. One would have to see what sort
of real HP gains it provides.

I do wonder if it would be more cost effective, and
provide the same performance gains, to provide a kit
for fitting a Weber downdraft on the Amphi engine.
That would be a true performance carb upgrade, just
need the proper intake manifold. When I upgraded to a
Weber years ago on my old Spitfire the transformation
was like magic.

It is great to see all of this experimenting going on
with Amphis. Disc brakes, fuel injection, etc.. One
fellow at Celina was seriously discussing that there
is someone out there who is planning to retrofit a
Corvair automatic transmission into the Amphi.

I always leave Celina with some great ideas from other
Amphis. Some are simple such as fitting a piece of
heat shrink tubing over the brake line where it goes
into the body. Others like rewiring so that there is
a seperate fuse box in the engine compartment to power
all of the stuff in the rear. I only wish I had the
time, skills, and ingenuity (or at least a big pile of
cash to source it all out!).
