Starter problem

Before replacing solenoid check for a flat spot on the starter. It's easy
to do since the starter is easily assessible. Simply rotate the starter
shaft a fraction of a turn with your fingers and try starting again (remove
hand first)!

Re: Starter problem

I too had the same problem. I removed the solenoid, drilled a small hole
in the body, sprayed TV tuner cleaner internally, replaced and all worked
well. May have to manually press top button to activate. Has been working
OK now for several years. WD-40 may work as well. Contacts inside become
dirty from arceing.
Also a solenoid from a 64 mstng will work as well, but no push button.
Good luck. P.J.H.

NEVER use WD-40 for any electrical applications. It is flammable and
it will attract dust dirt. ALWAYS use a dielectric grease or spray
(contact oil).

Re: Starter problem

Thanks, everyone for all the suggestions on my "no
start" problem. As it turns out, the problem was not
with any loose connections, cables or solenoid. It is
the starter. Verified by bench testing. I'm replying
so the cause is noted in the arhives in case anyone
else has a similar problem in the future. In the
meantime I've been starting it the old fashioned way-
roll down hill in gear and let out the clutch; but
that's a bit hard to do when in the water.
Does anyone have a valid Manufacuturer/part number for
the correct starter? I contacted Napa online and asked
for a starter for a 1962 Triumph and they came back
with a Beck Arnley starter(Napa #187-0011) but it
shows it has a solenoid attached which would not be
correct. Were the Amphi staters different than the
Triumph's? If anyone has purchased one from one of the
auto parts chains and can supply a valid part number,
I would be greatful.
Thanks. G.Z.

Greg:
I've purchased several from Pep Boys and Auto Zone. I always ask them to
reference the oldest Triumph Spitfire they can (which is usually the 67) and
it comes in perfect and ready to bolt on. There's alway British Victoria if
want to order one from them. Try Pep Boys if you have one close. There not
expensive and you'll have it the next day. If you need British Victorias
phone number let me know and I'll look it up.

Starter Problem

I had something happen today that I haven't heard of before. On the
way back from the lake, suddenly something started to rattle around in
the engine. It turned out that the gear part of the bendix assembly of
the starter had come loose and was rattling around on the shaft. I was
able to press it back into the bendix housing but don't trust it to
stay there. I was thinking a couple of spot welds would hold it in
place and I would keep the starter around for emergencies. I've never
heard of this happening before. Has anyone had such an experience? Of
course, these starters are made by Lucas (the prince of darkness).

Re: Starter Problem

Never heard of that problem before and that starter was (and still is) used on literally millions of cars. The main problem is on cars that haven't been used much they rust internally and so don't spin when you turn the key, temporaryfix is awhack with a hammer but really need rebuild.

Second problem is if engine misfires just at the point of starting it can chip the teeth from a part of the flywheel. If engine then stops in exactly the same place again the starter will just spin (known as the Russian Roulette problem) you can fix it with a new flywheel but if you have heat and a press the old starter ring can be removed from the flywheel and turned around. The old manuals say if you change the flywheel you should replace the starter as well. Everyone does here as the starters are still available at low cost.

The original Amphicar starters (Triumph crica 1961) had a removable plate so the bushes can be changed without removing the starter, works OK on Triumph but no space to do this on Amphicar. The later versions fit the same but don't have the removeable plate - I prefer these as the bushes hardly ever wear enough to need replacing and the cover plate can come loose and rattle.

Finally there are some lightweight starters available for the Amphicar (listed as 66 Triumph Spitfire) the original is very heavy. These replacements are made of alloy and are much much lighter, some also spin faster so engine starts quicker (but then there is a view that this is not good as it doesn't allow time for oil pressure to build) They are popular with the racers but are expensive. I've got a note here that a US supplier is www.aptfast.com
