The $115,000 Amphicar - 01-18-2006, 09:35 PM

Hammer price isn't shown yet, but here is the
link for the legendary $115,000 Amphicar.

http://www.barrett-
jackson.com/events/scottsdale/vehicles/cardetail_list.asp?id=182221

I told my Amphi about the Barret-Jackson sale
and he said he personally knows that Amphicar
being from the same class of '64 an all. Oh
the stories these Amphis tell... and now the
price barrier has been shattered! Amphi's head
is swelling like a balloon.

Congratulations:
FYI, the car was originally from Canada. Solid and original yet needing a
full resto. The seller did a complete and correct job on it too. A
beautiful car!

Sorry; Checked and rechecked Barret site and found the sale of one 64 amphi at 124,200.00 for Jan 18/06 . WOW!

A friend of mine was at the auction when Amphi came up on the block. He called immediately after the hammer dropped to share the news. He says that the crowd went absolutely wild when the Amphi broke the $100k mark. He alsotells methat people are spending some "crazy money", especially for this early in the auction.. He is certainly hoping that this wild exuberance continues when hisCuda goes on the block this Saturday http://www.barrett-jackson.com/event....asp?id=181385, I am certain his car will bring some insanely crazy money .

Those who have been on the list a while may remember about 5-6 years back. Everyone was equally wowed when an Amphisold at same or similar auction for $50k. While even today only a few Amphis are actually worth $50k (despite some eBay or overheard Celina fantasies), that event certainly did float prices upward. I see it as both a good and a bad thing. Certainly makes investing and restoring an Amphi more appealing but also raises the price of entry significantly. Likewise, it probably leads to an increasing number of Amphis destined to be trailer queens. That is what happened tomy friends Cuda, it was restored to such a state of perfection that he reaized he can no longerdrive it!

It also makes for a lot of shifty people (who are not real Amphicar
fans) now going out to dress up a poor condition Amphi and try to
pass it off for big bucks.
Like your pal's Cuda... If you do a date code full restoration to
pro-standards it goes for big bucks, but then every dork on the block
thinks his rusted 318 powered Cuda is worth near the same money, when
it isn't.
That auction is not a reflection of the real market, it can't be. I
saw a '56 Chevy that was in nice shape, but not great (no special
features, just a 2 door hard top with a crate 350) go for near
$70,000. Its a car you can buy for about $28,000 all day long if you
look around. Its gotta be a bunch of rich guys not wanting to get
"out-done" by the other (at least I think so).
Good for the seller though. I bet Barret-Jacksone will get a lot of
Amphicars submitted for auction selection next year!

Chears,
Mike Smith

Now that's the best line of the year--Congratulations Tom, right place, right time, right car

You need to come to Lake Ozark to tell the story and buy the beer, oh yea, bring your music CD's.

Now for the rest of the story------Who were the two rocket scientist bidding on the car, it took two to do this.

Now can we PLEASE have a commentary from the buyers viewpoint, was it you Mr. Wavy Dave, just to get the price up on BW2???

I have to say that was the most fun I've ever had in my life!
By now you all know that the $124,200.00 Amphicar was TRFNSRF.
Roger Sallee just happened to be near the car when the Barrett Jackson
driver needed to move it up in the staging line and they didn't know
quite how to drive it so Roger volunteered.
They don't want the owners to drive the cars accross the block anyway
because they corner you to keep you out of the way.
One nice thing about them is before they drop the hammer, if the price
isn't up where you said you wanted to be, they will give you the
opportunity to purchase it back at the next bid incerment. If you
elect to do that you have to pay both the seller and the buyer
commission of 8% each. If you add that to what you have in the car
along with what it would cost to ship it home again, it's generrally
better to sell it and move on to something else.
They have it set up pretty well there and I believe it virtually
eliminates any "shilling" you might find at other reserve auctions.
You can shill if there is a reserve on a car to try and get the other
bidders to move up, but when there is no reserve like BJ, you will
definately be paying 16% if you shill bid and no one answers you.
I couldn't believe how fast the auctioneer was yelling $40,000,
$50,000, $60,000 and before I knew it, $100,000 and "SOLD!!!
$115,000.00!!!" WOW!!
Anyway, my amphi started as a pretty solid car and complete.
I purchased it from Mike Echemann about 4 years ago and did a complete
rotisserie restoration over the winter of '03-'04.
The entire restoration is chronicled on my website
http://www.tbirdsquare.com, click on "RESTORATIONS" at the top, and
then click the Amphicar link.
Many thanks to Mike Echemann, (Hugh) Gordon Imports, (ESPECIALLY
SHELLEE!!!) And Gord Souter!
