looking for an Amphicar shell - 05-11-2006, 11:20 PM

I'm sending out this note to see if anyone knows of an Amphicar shell that isn't worth restoring. Maybe they might sell it? Here is why I'm asking: I met a man that cuts up cars & rebuilds them onto other wheels &chasis. All he wants is thebody of the Amphicar. (He calls it the part that you would wax.) He bought one in California & had it shipped to New Jersey & plans to cut it up. It's in pretty good shape & could be restored. He said if he could find one in worse condition he'd think about restoring this one & not cut it up. It would be nice to save another Amphicar if possible.

Pleaselet me know if there is one out there that isn't worth restoring. I can be reached at ribcab@verizon.net or at 609-726-0341.

Thanks, Ina in the Boro

If he is just looking for a Amphi shell why not buy fiberglass
panels, etc from Gord and make one? If his Amphicar is anywhere near
worth restoring as you indicated cutting it up doesn't make much
sense.

I agree but he doesn't care. He claims that he has $21,000 into the car already. He shipped it from California. I can't imagine WHY someone would really have that much money into something & then destroy it. Ina

If the fellow's in New Jersey like you say, then perhaps he may want to get in
touch with Billy Syx at East Coast Amphicar (Website:
http://www.amphicar.net/eca) by giving him a ring at 609-625-1015. It is quite
possible that Billy may have a "less restorable" shell to trade for the one
that is perhaps better suited to restoration that the fellow has now. Couldn't
hurt to call...

Sorry I didn't answer this before. I was away for the weekend. The guy, Ron Mule, owns a body shop. He seems to specialize in cutting up cars & redoing them on different chasis or wheels or whatever. I've never been there. My friend met him & learned all of this because he saw an Amphi sitting in his yard. It seems llike this guy Ron bought the car in California & had it shipped to NJ. When my friend Jim spoke with Hugh Gordon Jim discovered that Hugh knows the car & almost bought it.

Why is he cutting it up? Who knows. I called over there on Thurs. & was told by an employee that now Ron decided that he was going to rebuild it or sell it. Ina
