Amphibious TV - 05-22-2006, 02:31 PM

We might have to pay the equivalentof about $9 for a gallon forgasoline here in the UK but we also have some of the best car related TV in the world - especially an award winning BBC programme called " Top Gear "- I think this is sometime shown on Discovery Channel in the States and it can often be found on Internet download sites.

Last night Top Gear did a big feature on amphibious cars, there was abrief mention of Amphicar at the start but then they constructed 3 of their own, a Toyota Pickup with a 230HP outboard that went surprisingly well. A VW Camper that became a houseboat - and sunk - and a Triumph Herald, same age as Amphicar and looks a bit like but this one was a sailboat with what must have been a 20foot mast on it.

All very entertaining and well worth watching if you get the chance, more info here:

but you can not get to it from outside the UK:

What a pain ! I know there was talk of doing that, for those that don't know the BBC is not funded by advertising, everyone in the UK with a TV pays about $200 a year for a licence to watch it so there was talk of stopping "non licence payers" viewing content - although of course I will now have the same problem when I'm next in the States which will be very cross making grrrrrrr.

Anyway - two ways around that - if you can find a UK based proxy server (try google) that should confuse it enough to work, alternatively you can download it from www.finalgear.com although it is normally in Torrent format so will need a bit of fiddling if you haven't done it before. I'm told the version on Discovery is just edited highlights - you really want the "full fat" directors cut.

Finally, for issues with the language, use http://www.effingpot.combest source for US - UKtranslation.

It's still being talked about here - a lot of the Triumph Herald people in the States want to see it so should have news about where you can download a copy soon. For a flavour of the way the show works there is a 5 minute clip from the last series you can watch here.

What they did is get some kids witha "pimp my ride" type car and some gentlemen with an Austin Healey and the cars were raced up a hill in what was described as a battle between acne and arthritis !

Enjoy !
