Re: Rules about boat registration
Thanks Mike, I spoke with DNR today [again] on the phone. It was suggested that I buy the car/boat, come in with the bill of sale and they will work it out. Am I missing something? Then I called [again] 800 MVA. I need to pay the tax based on the price. Wasn't there a owner in Md.? How did he register it as a boat?
Thanks All.....
Joey

When I registered in PA, I first titled it as a motor vehicle. When I went to register it as a boat I ran into similar confusion. All I did was called someone at DMV, I provided proof that tax had been paid already and that was all they needed.

Good Morning Arnold and Everybody,
I ran into problems when I decided bid on ebay. I went to Maryland DNR in Annapolis about paying taxes on the boat half. OUCH..... they told me that I need a title for the boat and it would be based on the sale of the Amphi. The lady said that it isn't like having a boat and trailer. Maryland Motor Vehicle told me much of the same. My question as I would still love to have an Amphi here in Denton, Md., how do you get 2 titles without paying 100% tax to DNR and Md. DMV?

Re: Rules about boat registration
Just saw this so I thought I'd respond for New Jersey. I went to get my car title about 4 years ago from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. They couldn't figure out what to do about the boat title even after I gave them Billy Syx's Amphicar info. They looked up his car & saw that it was titled for a car AND a boat. They agreed that I should have 2 titles but didn't want to make that big decision on signing the paperwork. I remember the lady I dealt with was so very nice. She told me I'd have to call her back in a week after her supervisor came back from vacation.
I have all of my notes to prove how many times I called the Bureau of Motor Vehicles & kept getting the same answer. No one could make the decision WHAT to do about the boat title.
After months of frustration I finally found out that the marine police had to see the car & it was THEY that would give me the boat title. Since the car has been in rehab for the last 4 years I still haven't finished my quest for that boat title. I sure hope they haven't changed the rules of the game because I'm going to go to the marine police soon.
From what I've been told about the marine licenses: if your state requires the license you will need it for any state that you go boating in. If your state doesn't require a separate license then you shouldn't need it for another state you visit. I'm not sure if it's true but that's what I've heard.

I'm working on a Amphicar registration problem. In my state a boat
registration was not needed for an Amphicar as long as there was a
current auto registration. That changed this week when Deiter Harre
and I got into a little trouble putting our cars in a small North
Carolina lake. I am planning to call the North Carolina Wildlife
Resources Commission and press the case a little. But before I do, I
would like to get some information on what other states require. Please
email me if your state does not require an Amphicar to be registered as
a boat.

Ina -
I spoke with a Coast Guard last summer and he confirmed my belief that your vessel only needs to adhere to the laws of the state it is registered in. Your state laws only apply to your vessel and they can not force you to adhere to out of state regs.
