SV: Electric Radiator Fan

Hi
Peter,

I use the British made Kenlowe
fans.

I have no standard rigid
fan at all, but only 2? electrical fans, one 13” and one 10”. They
fit perfectly on the Amphi radiator, the only thing you have to fabricate is
some sheets of metal or hard board to block off the areas that isn’t
covered with the fans. Otherwise you will have a lot of ?warn air re-circulated
around the radiator.

The electrical wiring is
very simple: Both fans are connected with one thermostat/control box. The Kenlowe
fans are supplied with very instructive installation manuals and are complete
with fastenings, cables e.t.c.. I can absolutely recommend them.

I have my thermostat
adjusted to start the fans when the water temp is approx 195 F. This summer we
have had very nice and warm weather and I made a test trip on small roads with
a cruising speed around 45-50 mph and the outside temp of 90+F. Under these
conditions I guess the fans where active less then 50% of the time. This was
with 2 people and 2 dogs aboard.

One extra thing I did to
eliminate a lot of heat in the engine bay was to double the exhaust muffler: Around
the standard muffler I wrapped an insulation of standard glass-fibre and then a
thin sheet of standard mild steel that was formed/hammered in around the gables
and then welded together on the underside. It looks o.k and I guess I have
eliminated both sound and heat.

Let me know If you are interested
in pictures of the fan or muffler.

V?nliga h?lsningar/ Best regards

Bo Strander

Can anyone suggest
a good electric radiator fan? I've seen a few for

sale (JC Whitney, Victoria British) but i'm not sure what will fit on

the car. Thanks!

Peter

Hi--I am interested in your fan application. Could you email some pictures to show just how you did the installation? Did you use two fans? I have an overheating problem and have thought that a fan might solve the problem.--Thanks----Ray Prophet

Just my too cents, but first thing for a hot engine on this car would be to check to see that the rubber leal around radiator shroud is in good shape and sealing the intake side from the exhaust side, if they mix, you just keep getting hotter and hotter air thru the radiator. Next thing, take out the thermostat, unless you live up north and need to warm it up to get the heater hot fast, mine has no thermostat and runs at 160F water temp, I have gauges so this is not a guess--good luck

Re: SV: Electric Radiator Fan

My amphi always runs in the normal range regardless of outside
temperature and number of people or weight on board. I use all the
stock stuff however I did have a new radiator core installed on the
original amphi tanks. Clean and flush the entire system including the
heater core every year and fill with a new 50/50 antifreeze mixture.

As mentioned the top radiator seal needs to be on plus engine timing
correct, etc. I also made an in-line bilge blower for the rear
compartment so when you shut the engine off (in or out of the water)
it doesn't overheat and peg the temperature gauge. The blower is
mounted on the muffler side and blows all the hot air out of the
engine compartment while sitting. This allows for easier starting
after shutting off especially on a hot day and prevents the dreaded
vapor lock.
