side mirror info needed - 06-03-2007, 11:38 PM

Has anyone put a side view mirror on the driver's door up near the window & not had to drill holes to mount it? I was told that it was possible to buy a 'clip on ' mirror so I wouldn't have to drill holes into the body of the car. I did buy a mirror that I have to drill holes to mount but if there is such a thing as a 'clip on' style I'd rather not drill holes. Any info out there?

Thanks. Ina in the Boro

Ina: If you are talking about a mirror that attaches to the top of the door frame; a 'peep'mirror may work. I haven't seen one in a while, but , they use set screws on the the bracket which is a 'c' channel shape and fits in a window channel or top of door frame. I know they wereused on1955-1959 chevy and GMC trucks. Probably a hotrod shop would have them too. since we don't have 'door frames', it might work in the vent channel with window slightly down. Thanks for this info. I think this is what my friend was talking about. I wonder if we use this mirror, will our doors still be water tight? If I decide to drill holes & mount the mirror on the body of the Amphicar do you think I should use any underlayment (rubber or something) between the mirror & the metal?

It is so dangerous driving without that side mirror! I made a left turn & forgot to look left before I turned. Boy was I lucky no cars were coming! Ina in the Boro

You would generally be mounting a mirror on top ofthe front fender or door at a point well above the waterline. By the time you have significant water coming in at the mirror you have bigger problems to be worying about? Almost any mirror will have a mounting plate ofrubber, plastic, or something similar to keep water out and, more importantly, to protect the paint.

Glad to hear you are finally on the road / water.

Thanks for the mirror info. Yes, the Amphicar is FINALLY in my possession. It's been in different shops since 2003. Thanks to Dave the Wave I have a very nice transmission. This year in Celina I'll be able to get out of the water without pushing the Amphi onto dry land. I also won't have to stop every 15 minutes to keep adding water or worry about overheating.

There are still some minor issues: like opening the windows &trying to get the passenger door to close, but they are nothing to worry about. (Gord, I'll see you in Celina for those little things.)

I'm still REAL nervous aboutputting it into water. We have a small lake nearby where we tested the Amphicar last year by tying ropes to the car & just pushing it into the water to see if it would float. I want to drive the Amphi back therenow to swim it but am finding myself REAL chicken about it. I keep saying, "Tomorrow!"

See you in Celina! Ina in the Boro

Robert & Ina: I had to smile to myself, my 67 amphi has been ready for the
water for three weeks now and still have,nt had the nerve to put it in the
water, I been rebuilding the car sence 2002.
I,ve been driving it on land and hope to have the nerve soon to take its
first swim in 30 years.
