More Amphibi-Flix

If you liked yesterday's Australian ABC-TV segment on Ben Carlin and
his Half-Safe, you'll LOVE the following old amphibian-related
newsreel footage courtesy of The Smoking Gun website:

"The Car That Can Swim"
See the original Amphicar protype that some call "The Fly" in action.
Weird fins? Sure. But for some reason, I find its dash oddly
fascinating...

Traffic Dodger: Auto Takes to Water"
Well, we're in the realm of the "normal" here, insofar as this term
applies to the Amphicar. A charming promo newsreel showing several
early production model Amphicars rampaging around...
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/tsgtv/i...link=TSGTVshlk

"Fishing with Motorcycles"
And for those who'd like an amphibious motorcycle. This one comes
from Spain...

Enjoy!

Re: More Amphibi-Flix

Make DVDs, you say? That'll have to be someone else's good deed, I'm afraid. Fact is, my computer is SO ancient it's frankly a wonder it ain't steam powered. It's still got a5?" floppy drive in the spare bay. Though it can read both, it can't even burn CDs, let alone DVDs. I mean, how many people do you know of still running Windows 98...FIRST edition? Get the picture? But I suppose I'll keep nursing it along until the smoke from it gets too heavy for me to see its great fat flickery cathode ray screen. 'Cause I mean, How else am I gonna run my WordPerfect 4.1 and play myLeisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards?

Geezingly yours,
~Bilgey~

Fab clip Bilgey,

I know exactly the locations, I was at each of them about 10 days ago.

It starts at the top of the Ku-Damm in Berlin, in the background next to the
church is the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial. This was finished in December 1960.
The leaves are on the trees so earliest it can be is April 1961, would have
been an interesting time in Berlin, 6 months before the wall went up. The
Fiat 500 behind the Amphicar is earlier than 1961 and I can't see anything
else to date the picture - it could be later, 1962 or even 1963 but it looks
like the same people and cars as in the printed brochures and they are all
dated 1961.

The next shot is about 6 miles away on the Tegel Lake and then finally it's
back to the factory on Eichborndamm street about a mile from the lake.

International Amphicar Owners Club members will be able to read more about
Berlin Amphicars in an article I'm putting together for the club newsletter.

Also note the white car appears to have an extra air inlet on the back -
similar to the "fly" prototype - again that points to 1961 as they were
still playing with different versions of the Triumph engine then.
