windshield washer pump - 06-06-2007, 07:06 PM

Anyone know where I can find an oem washer pump? Or is this pump like
the original bilge pump? A POS? I can always put in an after market
pump.

The OEM windshield washer pump and nozzle was a single assembly. It was operated by cupping your left hand, reaching way out the driver's side window, and splashing a handful of water onto the windshield. It was never a very popular feature.

Glenn,

You probably have a Canadian Amphicar. One of my cars had such a
thing and I was told it came from Canada and it was some Canadian
requirement. The sprayer nossle was damaged on mine and the whole
system didn't look stock Amphicar so I removed it and installed the
regular switch, bezel and knob. I'm quite sure I kept the old parts
though if you would like them. These include the control itself with
attached pump and the water bottle.

Hey John:

It is my understanding that this car was purchased new from a Portland dealer. I guess it could have crossed the border. I don't know. I ran into the fellow that I bought the car from Sunday at home depot. He told me that the washer was on it when he had it (20 years) and that the previous owner may have put it on. I thought I was the third owner, but just learmed that the 1st owner had the car a very short time. Puts me in 4th place, but the caris still a native Oregonian by ownership.

My washer has a fluid bag attachehed to the rt front fender well and the pump is mounted above the glove box under the hood. There's a push button switch mounted under and besides the blower kill switch. That button drove me nuts trying to figure out what it was for. Does this sound like your installation??

P.s.

I found a universal pump in a local store. I plan to hook it up today.

The windshield washer pump kits were made by SWF-"Scheibenwasi". The kit consisted of a white plastic bottle which mounts inside a black brace which attaches to the car inside the truck. It came with a pump which mounted under the dash. It's a simple can type pump with a white knob whichsort of looks like anAmphicar knob but not exact. Anyone who has one of these should find the letter W on the face of this knob.

If anyone needs a photo let me know.

Hi Glenn,

No, your system sounds like an after market add-on. The Canadian cars
didn't have the bilge blower and the washer was built into the wiper
switch. You turned the knob to engage the wipers and you pulled the
knob to squirt the washer fluid. The fluid bottle was a plastic
bottle located under the hood just alongside the brake fluid container
and the squirter nozzle was mounted between the wipers on the cowl.
