I almost lost my car due to the oil cooler letting go. With modern
synthetics I really wonder if coolers are all that necessary? Any

Hi All,

It seems that the use of Oil Coolers in our Amphicars has been the subject of
some debate recently.

On the one hand, there is the ongoing challenge of keeping Amphi within normal
operating temps. Certainly, having the oil cooler in hooked up helps keep the
temp down. On the other hand, there have been stories of these now 40 year old
coolers rupturing which leads to spraying of hot oil and resultant engine
compartment fires. For this reason, some owners have taken to bypassing the oil
cooler.

So, has anyone found an aftermarket or substitute oil cooler that can be
purchased new and has not been subjected to 40 years of potential corrosion? I
do think this would be a great repro item (hint to Hugh, Gord, Allan, etc).

I think the rupturing issues were with the hoses that would then
spray oil all over the hot engine. If the oil cooler develops a leak
since it is tucked into a hole under the radiator unsure how much oil
it would or could spray on the engine?

There are many different sizes of aftermarket oil coolers on the
market and brazing the amphi fitting on should not be all that
difficult. Most parts houses will let you check out what they stock
in the back which would help in locating something close.

Maybe Poda or Dave can chime in. I could be mistaken
but I think they both had ruptures of the cooler
itself.

Amphicar made some really good oil cooler and radiators.

They areprobably the best things on the car as far as quality. You can have your oil cooler hot-tanked and tested just as a radiator, also there seems to be extra ones floating around if you just ask someone. The oil gets pretty hot in the 1147 under load. I think it is better to have one than not too, just make sure you have new hoses and check periodically.
