Amphi Value

Just wondering what you guys think about value when compared to
color. Of the original four colors all things being equal which seems
to fetch the highest prices?

My guess would be "resale" red is the most popular color. Lots of
cars have been changed to red (the $55k car on eBay was obviously
green). The color can have an effect on price depending on the
buyer's preferances. An astute buyer will pay more attention to
condition rather than color but that is not always the case.

There was a gold colored Amphi in an auction a few months ago. For
me, I would not be interested because it was not a good color for
the car. If others have the same opinion, the value will surely be
affected. It only takes one buyer who loves it to sell.

If it were me, I would NEVER change the color. I am a bit of a
purist so I prefer original cars. Even the green has grown on me.
Was my least favorite color, yet I have owned more green cars than
any other.

Re: Amphi Value

IMHO, Amphi is no different than any other convertible
in that Red is the color to go with. And that is
coming from the owner of a white one.

Re: Amphi Value

The Barrett Jackson auction people refer to Red as the "auction color"
because cars that color often draw the most money at auctions. Red is
certainly a good Amphicar color but personally I prefer White
Amphicars because they they least show the crud from boating in hard
water.

Amphi value

What would a car that brings $65K today sell for in 1996?

Hmmmmm, what's this, reverse investment strategy????

I believe most owners would want to know what one that sold for 65K today would be worth in 2017

Its going to be a really big number, but with not much value as the dollar continues to slide down the slippery slope of the global economy. They are all worth about the same now as ten years ago, except for improvements from restoration, the number is bigger but the value or true worth is about the same----IMO

Remember when gasoline was .35, new truck was $2000---gas was $1, new truck was $5000---gas was $2, new truck was $15,000 and now gas is $3, new truck $30,000+

So in 2017 gas will be $9 and a new truck will be $90,000

All this is not to be construed as reliable, accurate or worthwhile information-----just scary

Damn---2017 only ten years away------------that's scary, especially since the Mayan calendar ends in 2014

Re: Amphi value

There is an old saying about classic cars. The fastest way to make a small
fortune restoring classic cars is to start with a large fortune!!

For the moment I do see prices sitting flat. With the economy in the crapper
and the current credit crunch, many of the makets for luxurys and toys are being
hard hit. It is not as easy as it was even 12 months ago to tap into a
low-interest home equity loan to buy an Amphicar.

Over time values will continue to increase (as will the cost of restorations and
everything else). I still believe an Amphicar will remain a very good
investment. Just do not expect the crazy rates of return that characterized the
last 6 years or so.

Re:Amphi value

Rob,

I'm not sure why you are asking, but below is how you would
figure the value of a $65,000 Amphicar back to 1996 using the Consumer
Price Index. The current index (July 2007) is 208.3. The index for
1996 was 156.9. So, the value back to 1996 would be:

$65,000 * (156.9/208.3) = $48,960.

This type of calculation assumes that the price of the Amphicar moves
similarly to prices in general in the U.S. economy. You can find a full
list of CPIs at www.bls.gov or you can ask me for them. I have an Excel
file with the index estimated back to 1801.

Arnold
p.s. Sharon and I are planning to attend the Mirror Lake Classic in
Florida. Your trailer is holding up great, but my blue Amphi is rusting
away in the rear quarter panels. It's time to pull the car apart and
have some body work done, again.
