Amphicar-Lovers Forum: IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - 12-26-2007, 01:13 PM

Hi All,

After three years of debating the issue, I have decided to move the
Amphicar-Lovers Digest/Forum off of Yahoo to a dedicated site at
http://www.amphicar770.com The cut over will likely take place by the
end of January 2008.

The move is based on feedback from list members. They have asked for
better capabilities to store photos and documents, more powerful
search of the 17,000 existing messages, ability to connect more
easily to other members, etc. I will also be setting up a blogs
session where members may share their amphibious ramblings.
Additionally, I will create a seperate area for IAOC members only and
a link to the IAOC. (Remember, the amphicar-lovers is not the IAOC so
do if you are not a member do join the premiere Amphicar Owners Club
at www.amphicar.com).

I will be migrating the existing YahooGroup archive to the new forum
shortly. This way, you can search back to 2001. For testing purposes,
you can currently search about a year back.

What should you do now? Well, get over to www.amphicar770.com and set
up your account. (many of you have done so already in the past). This
way you will be all set when the cut over takes place. Do start
trying out the various features of the forums, photo gallery, etc.
Send me your feedback to amphicar770@yahoo.com. I am especially
intererested in what you like, dislike, bugs or problems, etc.

Shameless promotion. I have spent a considerable sum of $$ on
software, hosting, etc. and many more hours setting this all up. For
this reason, I have incorporated som Google AdSense links. Do me a
favor and click on some of them. Each time you do, a few pennies
gets sent my way to support keeping this going.

Note: If you are seeing google ads within the messages themselves it
means you are visiting as a guest. Registered users who log-in will
not see these within the messages.

Cheers,

Mike Israel

As long as there is a way to "subscribe" and get all the messages via Email,
this will be great.
If it is we based only, or just has a way to "watch a thread", then we will
be missing a major feature fo the Group.
I just do not have time to go read forum after forum after forum for all my
interests.

Will we have this feature?

This has been the biggest sticky point keeping me from migrating sooner. I will be incorporating a "compromise solution by including an option for instant email notification for forums. If you are subscribed to a forum using instant email notification, whenever a new thread is posted you will be sent an email containing the details and the thread text. You do not need to subscribe to each thread and you will get full message text. The downside is that you can not reply via email but will have links to quickly do so. The upside is that while we may have fewer users the forum format may encourage more active users. We have557 members but I think fewer than 50 ever post, and maybe 20 regularly. The "active users" are the ones asking for enhanced
capability.

I think I am understanding this correctly. We are basically going to
lose our ability to communicate via email like we have now? I guess that
will be OK, but having to log into a forum to post is not nearly as nice
as what we currently enjoy. I hope this does not lower the number of posts.

I find the Yahoo method of email digest to be really user friendly and I am
therefore part of many groups. It'll be interesting to see how the new site
works but from what I've heard so far it seems less user friendly. Maybe I
just don't understand it yet.

Oh, Ye of little faith!! ;-)

Actually, I am incorporating a modification that willl allow the new forum to also provideemail delivery and replies to messages very much like Yahoogroups. Thus, we will get the new forum features without losing the single biggest benefit to Yahoo. I should have this part up and running later today. Lots of time & $$$ getting this going so do click a few of those google ads when you visit amphicar770.com (every .30 cents helps!). See you tonight on the chat at 9PM.

Will this Yahoo groups go away or can those of us who
want to stil use it? I think there may be more daily
users than might appear. Often I will reply directly
to the sender rather than the entire group so it may
appear I am not an "active" user but I read all the
messages and like having them go directly to my inbox.
I have no need to add pictures when replying. Thanks
for all your work over the years Mike.

Most likely I will close it to new posts. As mentioned, the new forum will also incorporate a feature to receive/reply to messages via email.

Most likely I will close it to new posts. As mentioned, the new forum will also incorporate a feature to receive/reply to messages via email.

Just a little background info about lists. Lists are not run democratically; they areunder the sole control of the list-owner (and host). The list-owner can selectively allow, bar and remove list-members. The list-owner can also halt or terminate the list at any time, even at 0400 on a Friday if that suits him. I can't think of any "rights" that a list-member has.

The rational list-owner will want his list to succeed by being useful, so he must use his czar-like powers only to enforce civility and decorum (zap the porn and spammers and nut-cases).

The list-owner may decide to move the list to a different host, especially if that new host offers features beyond those of the old host. The up-side can be fun new features (like photo albums or sound attachments or embedded photos, etc). The down-side is the inevitable confusion (you need to begin posting to a new address, there may be a slightly different "look & feel" to the new interface) andsome people just don't like change.

Assuming the move is well thought out, and the list-owner is committed to the change, the list-owner will NOT want his old list competing with his new list. He will close the old list as of some arbitrary date, perhaps leaving only a post directing new-comers to the new list.

If anyone can't live with this, you are free to start your own list, on Yahoo or somewhere else. (Nothing will make you appreciate the time and effort that a list-owner puts into managing a list until you try it yourself! )

I would hope that our community will not split into competing lists; having a single focal point is a tremendously valuable capability. Some car communities are so huge that they have separate forums for engines, suspension, body, etc. All the experts are not always in one spot, so cross-forum issues are sometimes not thoroughly covered.

This move of the list will really be a shut-down of one list andthe populationof another list. With Mike moving the list archives and other overhead, it looks like nothing will be lost. Inevitably, there will be some transitional problems. Mike should make a simple, step-by-step guide for accessing the new list location, addressing any preference setting options and describing how posts will flow in and out.

I'm ready to move, but I'll stay until Mike publishes his official cut-off date. After that, the new list will probably take a week or soto sort out new arrivals and give everyone a warm feeling that things are working right. You may want to hold off critical issues and questions until you feel the community is at ease with its new home.
