Help with Wiper Blades and/or Arms - 02-13-2008, 11:03 AM

Hi all,

Take a look at these photos. I am in need of some new blades and possibly arms. Any ideas on what these are? Suggested replacements?

Thanks

Didn't someone find a good replacement arm that just needed to be polished
to look stock? Having dial up sucks but perhaps someone could search the
archives and repost?

They look very like early split screen VW van. Totally different to normal
Amphicar and wouldn't work very well - that type of blade is designed for a
flat screen. Someone did mention a while ago that they had seen a few
Amphicars with a different wiper system - which they thought might have been
original factory. Certainly wasn't on late cars, maybe on the very early
1961 cars that went to the States.

Tom I'd just change the arms and blades for normal Amphicar.

However the way the wipers work is one area on Amphicar I'd really like to
improve. However much you try the rod system never seems to work
effectively. There must be a more modern cable type system that could be
made to work. I've looked at a few but not found anything suitable yet as I
really don't want to enlarge the two holes where the wiper pivots come
through the body.

I am using Trico arms that were for the mid 50's GM cars. Mine are
from a 55 Pontiac though I believe they were used probably into the
early 60's. I put 12" Trico blades on, they too were from the same
year and match the wiper arm. This setup can be found and bought at
most old vehicle swap meets, from $40 to $80 depending on your
bartering skills.

To make these work on a Amphi you need to purchase the two right hand
arms (verify) as the mid 50's wipers start at the middle and go up
were as Amphi starts left and both go right, so you need the same
arms. There is an adaptor that fits over the Amphi pivot and is
secured by a set screw that allows the Trico arm to fit onto the
pivots. You can find these adaptors also at a swap meet from the same
people that sell the Trico arms and wipers.

I will shortly be working on the next and maybe better set up as I
may have found a wiper guy at the fall Hershey meet who has a bunch
of older wiper parts that are European.

There was a write up last year in the newsletter that gave all the correct numbers, method of installing and whom to call for the arms and blades.

The blades that I discovered are not the VW type and do work properly. Here is the write up that was in the newsletter:

Finally a reproduction wiper arm and blade combination that is readily available, looks presentable and actually works. As we all know locating NOS or good used wipers is becoming impossible to find yet affordable. I have been experimenting and using for over 3 years reproduction replacements that have been trouble free. For a little under $100 and a little polishing you can have two (2) new set ups.

Call Rob from Ficken Wiper Service (NY) at 631-587-3332 (WiperMan.COM - Wipers, Wipers, Wipers) and ask for two (2) wrist action type passenger wiper arms for a 1948 Mercury / Ford that fit a 20-11 wiper blade of which you will also need two (2). Both the arm and blade are stainless steel with the arms already factory polished to chrome like finish. The blades are dull stainless (gray/silver) and will need taken apart (easy) to be polished to match the arms. I used Eastwood’s white rouge compound and did a pass with a Dremel 414, 429 and a 423E polishing wheel respectively, though other materials and wheels should work. Each blade took approximately a little over an hour to polish and reassemble.

The only part I have not found (as of yet) that is required is the adaptor that fits onto the existing Amphi wiper linkage shaft. This allows the connection of the new style arms. The adaptor has two (2) allen set screws that lock the new arm(s) onto the shaft. These adaptors can typically be found at antique automotive swap meets however you will need to drill them out to 15/64 to fit the shaft. Recommend filing any burrs off the existing shafts and polishing with a small wire wheel which Dremel also has. I do have some of these adaptors and a box of the special set screws.

After installing the adaptor to the shaft you may need to adjust / move the new arms several times to get them in the perfect park position on the windshield. When doing these adjustments use a spray bottle of water for accurate results, do not operate wipers on the windshield dry! Imagine being able to use your wipers knowing that they actually work and blade refills are available. Happy wiping!

Hi Keith,
I could sure use a set of those adapters. My wipers have not worked well for many years, as they throw the blade off of the arm, every time they are turned on. Please let me know how much money to send you, and I can do a Paypal.
Thanks,
Charles

Do not forget the pivots. These are the parts the wiper arm slides over. They usually have grooves wore into them. Also look closely at area of body they bolt to. Good chance of crack developing, usually on passenger side. Later Dave the Wave
