Re: Front coil-over shocks
Have you posted the part drawings for the shock spring adapters ? If not could I get a copy of them ? I use Solidworks so you can send them in SolidWorks format. My Email Address Is Tony@ortakales.com
Thanks

Is there (or was there) a coil-over version of the Maeco PK22K1?
Not that I am aware of. There use to be. In order to use the PK22K1 shocks you'll need to have a set of custom collars made.
Can I put my Amphi springs on the model being offered now?
I modified the cad file last night to see how tight of a fit it would be. The original Amphicar spring id is fairly close to the od of the shock. The Maeco shock buldges out at the bottom of the shock to hold the orignal collar. While it could be done personally I would not be comfortable with how thin the wall section would get on the collars that would be needed. So I believe the answer is no to being able to use you original springs with the Maeco shock.
Should you want a softer ride for some reason Ken is correct in that Summit Racing has lighter springs as well. The id of the custom collar may need to be adjusted for it.

Re: Front coil-over shocks
I found this on Monroe's site:
http://www.monroe.com/catalog/docume...engthSheet.pdf
I have not had time to look through the whole thing. It looks like they make a lot of shocks with the correct diameter mounting bolt, just need to cross reference that with the extended and compressed lengths.
I will try to look at it in more detail when I get time...

Front coil-over shocks - Modified Spring Reatainers Cad Files
I attempted to post these files a few times and but the system only allows you to upload 97kbs. Therefore I cannot post the files. The zip file of both retainers are shy of 1 megabyte. There reatiners are a simple revolve should you want to create them yourself. If this gets fixed I'd be happy to post them alomg with the other stuff. If you send me a email I'd be happy to send them directly to you.

Re: Front coil-over shocks
I just assembled 2 sets of front shocks using Tonys (TORTAK)'s adapters. He makes them for using either original springs or new springs from summit racing. I made up brackets from square tubing to use one set on a late model Amphi with shock mounts inside trunk, other set has original springs and is for old style top mounts. These aluminum adapters are nice!

Re: Front coil-over shocks
The orginal shock is 13 inches hole centre to centre.
the spring in the ass. is 10 1/4.
in the photo above it looks like the spring is very compressed. what is its lenght off the car. compressing it will give a very stiff and high front end.,
I use Royal Distributing shocks #04-265 for fronts.($80 each) Our spring becomes to stiff adding to Gas charge of shock so I use ther 04-296 spring..$53.00 and there spacers to hold top.04-295-05 and 04-296-05
bottom is ajustable.
for bushing I use spring shop bushings rd 57s for fronts,, rb 71 for rear shocks
rear shock # is 04-268 a bit of work has to be done for wide springs to work.
And yes to use this on late cars an outside adapter is needed.
I have a few original brakeks but what there doing looks fine.

Re: Front coil-over shocks
I agree, the original springs are compressed too much and will be a problem. I will probably get another set of springs from Summit as in top photo.

Re: Front coil-over shocks
Interesting engineering but what's the problem with the Aldon shocks that
Hugh sells ? Is it just about the price or something else ?

I was having the same thought as David. Admittedly, the shocks from Hugh are not inexpensive but they are indeed a premium product. On all of my cars (not just Amphi) there are some areas where I am willing to splurge, shocks are one of those.
On a side note I am now dealing with the insurance company on repairing my wife's van that was in a colission with a stop sign running driver. The insurance company is all to eager to substitute original sheet metal and parts with Chinese sheet metal repros.

Re: Front coil-over shocks
Alden shocks had become so expensive that I recommended to Hugh that he find another source, and he did, at least for some of them and I suspect all of them soon. The company was changing things about the shocks with little concern for whether or not they would work well on the car. I talked to the company directly but was not happy with their response. Hugh found a new and much cheaper source for the front shocks and they even include the springs. You guys should check those out with Gordons. I haven't used them yet but they look real good.

John,
You are correct I do not see these on his web site but recall they were recently in one of the monthly fliers. Wait, here is something from one of the weekly specials from back in January ...
PART # 5-21-58
EARLY FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY
$99.95 EACH SHOCK S&H $10.70 EACH SHOCK
SEE IT NOW AT THE DRY LAND SWIM-IN!! Gordon Imports, Inc.
proudly announces new production of original specification 1960-1964 early,
front shock absorbers! First, let us say we are very satisfied with the current
Aldan premium, lifetime warranty, shock absorbers. We will continue to
include them in our product line. However, with the 2010 Aldan price
expected to be about $319.00 each, we decided to once again try to convince
our manufacturer to offer an original design, shock absorber. Well, you did it
Amphi owners! Your support of our hub caps, mouldings, bumpers, and
stainless product lines told us, “Go ahead, order and order big!!” Well, big it is!
Not only did we exceed the manufacturer’s minimum, but extra features are all
over the place! Forget 1960, think 2010: powder coated springs, dual
absorption rate external bumpers, dual internal shock action, relaxed absorption
on smooth surfaces, and aggressive absorption on irregular or off-road
conditions! Warranty is 1 year or 14,000 miles, which is double the original
Amphicar warranty!
HERE’S THE DEAL:
1.2010 normal catalog price is $129.00. You SAVE $190.00!!
2.January 30 through February 1, 2010, Weekend advance special price
is $99.95! You SAVE $219.05!!
3.Terms of sale are same as any other weekend special.
4. No core charges!! No fooling around with springs!! You just mount
and go!!
5.Shipments on a first come, first served basis. It will be just like our hub
caps and mouldings.
